Introduction

Filipe Afonso studied Mathematics at Faculty of Science, Porto University and graduated in architecture at Escola Superior Artística do Porto in 2001. MArch in Genetic Architecture with Honours, under the direction of Karl S. Chu, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. Currently he is assistant professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, School of Architecture. Prior joining CUHK he took part in several research projects founded by governmental institutions, coordinated a R&D department in the field of advanced computational design, have been the main editor of a scientific journal, published architecture projects in 15 different countries in more than 40 architecture books and magazines, published scientific papers, was appointed assistant professor in several institutions of international repute and took part in many exhibitions and lectures on architectural design, opening this way the possibility to establish an international network for research collaborations.

From 2010 is assistant professor at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, Lisbon. From 2011 assistant professor at Escola Superior de Artes e Design teaching a course unit on computational design techniques. From 2014 visiting professor at University Innsbruck, Institut fur Gestaltung, teaching the Studio Tectonics.

From 2006 founding partner of Arquitectos Anónimos, an award winning studio in Portugal, extending his previous background in advanced building technologies and computation to the practice of architecture. Filipe has realized many projects independently and in collaboration with architecture offices like Fuksas Studio, Rome. Has realized architecture projects in co-authorship, like the recently built Ílhavo Cultural Centre.
