Topic: Building with Cork: Towards a More Sustainable Practice in Architecture
Moderator: Mr. Patrick Hwang
The Chinese and Hong Kong economies are increasingly producing more eco-friendly projects, but it will be a long time before the sustainability of built façades in Hong Kong, known for its high-density urban environment, is commonplace.
This research seminar introduces cork agglomerates and cork composites as an environmentally friendly material for building envelopes, contributing for a certain idea of sustainment in architectural practice.
Filipe Afonso studied Mathematics at Faculty of Science at Porto University; graduated in architecture at Escola Superior Artística do Porto in 2001. He also holds a MArch in Genetic Architecture with honours from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona. Since 2006, he has been founding partner of Arquitectos Anónimos.
Since 2010s Professor Afonso has been assistant professor in several higher education institutions in Portugal, Austria and South Korea. He was appointed assistant professor in the School of Architecture at CUHK in 2014.
